Safe technique for tackling off the shoulder

First option for a defending side is to pressure the receiver and delay play in order to force a retreat or error and enable your team to rally support.

If the tackle has to be made put your own safety first before winning. Tackling off the shoulder in the players blind spot has added  dangers:

  • Stay alert.
  • Remember it is the rotating stick head that causes the worst injuries from the back swing or follow-through.
  • Do not linger in the danger zone.
  • Only use the left hand
  • Watch the opponent's hands as well as the ball.
